Developing Better Judgment
Developing and Disciplining Your Judgment
Activity 1 – Better Judgment Storytelling
There is an important relationship between individual judgment and team capacity to develop and nourish a culture of good judgment.
This activity is an opportunity to share stories with peers, exploring themes related to judgment in the workplace. Trusting the judgment of the people we work with is paramount to healthy team dynamics and the capacity to do our best work both individually and collectively.
Step 1
In groups of 4-5, each person tells two short (3-minute) stories.
Take two minutes at the beginning to quietly reflect about the stories you will share. Participants share stories in any order.
Step 2
Round 1
Tell a story of working with someone who had good judgment:
What did that person’s judgment make possible for your relationship
and for the work?
Step 3
Round 2
Tell a story about working with someone who had very poor judgment:
How do you know their judgment was poor?
How did you handle the situation?
How did it make you feel?
Step 4
After everyone has told their stories, discuss these questions:
How can I strengthen my own judgment?
How can I help others on my team or in my organization develop better judgment?
How can we strengthen our judgement collectively?
