Arena: Disciplined Social Innovation

Mentors and the Mentoring Process

Activity 1 – Developing a Mentoring Relationship

Step 1

Identify two potential mentors that can help you develop your social innovation. Identify people from different parts of the ecosystem you work in or are anticipating working in.

Step 2

For each potential mentor consider:

Why this person?
What are the qualities and experiences this person brings?
What do they have you are looking for?
How would they bring unique value to you?

Step 3

Observe that person ‘in action’ – at work, meetings, presentations.

Step 4

How do you ask them to consider mentoring you? Approach them and set up a brief meeting to make this request or ask for an informational interview to assess what is possible. Give them a couple of weeks to think about it. Outline for them the kinds of things you believe you could benefit from, as well as a framework for the time commitment you are asking them to make.
