Designing Effective Meetings I

Activity 1 – Meeting Post-Mortem

Step 1

Perform a post-mortem analysis on three of the worst meetings you have ever attended. On a sheet of paper, draw three circles. Imagine the setting of each meeting: where it was, who was there, etc.

Step 2

Document the ‘design elements’ for each of those meetings. Were you in small groups? Large groups? How was the time spent? What social and cultural dynamics were in play? How did you feel? Could you contribute? How much content was offered? How relevant was it to you or to the organization? How much thinking, how much feeling, and how much willing (action) took place?

Step 3

What was the preparation ahead of the meeting? Did you have an agenda, readings, preparatory questions or materials? What happened after the meeting, if anything?

Step 4

Get into groups of 3-4 and share findings. What are you becoming more aware of now as a designer of meetings?
