Coherence Mapping

ACTIVITY 1  Practicing Coherence Mapping

Step 1

In groups of 4-5, practice coherence mapping on a strategy you are working on in your organization. Ideally, sit at a table around a large sheet of paper. You can also do this standing with a poster on the wall or using an online tool, e.g., Miro.

Step 2

Identify the players responsible for the parts of the strategy. Draw them on the map.

Each person in the group represents different players. Have conversations with each other about your needs, document, and record everything on the map. Draw lines between the players and write your needs on them.

Document Your Conversations

What do you need from me to deliver your part?

Why do you need that?

When do you need it?

Step 3

Once the map has been filled out, identify possible imbalances in the workload. What changes could you make to the strategy based on this picture?

Step 4

If you have multiple strategies, repeat the process. Then compare the maps and look at cumulative load and capacity. Does everyone have the capacity to do the work assigned to them? Assess the loads and make changes to your strategy design as necessary.
