Characteristics of Complex Issues

ACTIVITY 1  Exploring Variables and Causation

Step 1

Working in small groups (3-4 people), choose a complex issue your organization is facing. Make a knowledge map using a large sheet of paper. In the center, state the complex issue.

Step 2

Discuss and record all of the known variables of this issue. Next, begin to identify causation. What do you know and what do you not know? Record what you know and how you know it connecting any of the dots along the way.

Step 3

Work in your group for about 20 minutes. Each group posts their map on the wall.

Step 4

Take time to read each group’s map.

Step 5

Discuss the complex issues as a group. Ask each other questions continuing to explore variables and causation.
