Speed Stating

Speed Stating: Resilience and Vulnerability

Step 1

Preparation 3-5 minutes

Make groups of 8-12 people (smaller groups are ok) sitting around a table. Each person needs an 11X17 piece of paper and a strong marker, e.g., sharpie.

Each participant identifies a current vulnerability in the organization.

In the center of the paper, simply state the vulnerability and draw a circle around the statement.

Step 2

Speed Stating 20-25 minutes

Participants pass their paper to the right. The recipient reads the statement. Based on the statement, write an idea that could improve the organization’s resilience to this particular issue. Circle the idea and draw a line to the connecting idea (central statement). Pass the paper to the right.

The next participant comments on the statement in the center or the previous comment. Draw a circle around the comment and a line to where it connects.

Continue passing the papers until everyone has their original idea.

Step 3

Each individual studies their Speed Stating Map for 15-20 minutes.

Next, with a partner, study your maps to identify themes, patterns, and emergent ideas.

What is compelling ? How would you prioritize the ideas?
