Performance review systems are pervasive in our organizations. They don’t support accountability. What we want is accountability, but what we buy is assessment. Accountability means you are free to stand behind your word and your work. Accountability supports trust, which builds system capacity. If we want to be human with each other, we need to look at how we can bring self-assessment and self-accountability to new levels to help our organization as a whole.
