ACTIVITY 1  Strategic Staircasing

Step 1

Work in groups of 3-4 people. Begin to mine your Three Horizon Map.

A strategic staircase can take several hours to several days. Strive to approximate a Strategic Staircasing process to explore the basic concepts of the backcasting methodology.

Step 2

Use sticky notes or markers to make connections. Look for patterns and potential connections.

Identify foundations that lead to next steps. From the Later column, imagine what needs to happen for that to occur and work yourself back to Now column.  Each team will work on a unique staircase using the Three Horizon Map. Have conversations with the other teams as your work unfolds.

Step 3

Have a group discussion about the different staircases the teams developed.
