Telling Stories to Share Diverse Perspectives

Storytelling Narrative Gathering

Step 1

Split into groups approximately 6-8 people. Each group is at a different table (you can make it work standing in circle).

During this activity you will tell two stories.

Round 1 Story What was your most meaningful day at work?

Round 2 Story What was your most difficult day at work?

Step 2

Round 1

Give participants 2 minutes to prepare their story for the first question.

In any order, each participant tells a 2-3 minutes story. Following their story, the storyteller (with help from the group) identifies the main 2-4 points. Write each point on a separate sticky note.

Step 3

After all stories have been told, participants move their ideas into the center of the table (or you could do this on a wall) creating an Idea Commons.

Step 4

As a group, investigate the Idea Commons looking for themes, patterns, and emergent ideas. Cluster ideas together.

Step 5

On an easel, or another sheet of paper, write out all of the new ideas from clustering the story headlines.

Repeat these steps for the Round 2 Story.
